Marc-André asked the obvious question: why not use software that already exists? Milwaukee ONE-KEY, Hilti ON!Track and the other options on the market looked like the logical place to start.
He started out helping Samuel as an IT advisor, looking for something that would fit Coboss. After the research, the demos and the meetings, the picture got clearer: none of them simply covered what their construction SMB needed.
The problem wasn't a shortage of software. It was finding the right balance for a local SMB.
Platforms built for very large asset fleets, hard to justify for an SMB.
Maintenance, bookings and history were uneven. AI voice mode was generally absent. Standalone GPS for high-value assets was often missing.
With gloves on, in a truck or on a job site, every extra step becomes an obstacle.
We wanted service in French and a team from here that understands construction in Quebec: the CCQ, the RBQ and what our job sites are actually like.
So we decided to build it ourselves — but not before checking we weren't the only ones with this problem.
From a conversation to a product in the hands of the first customers: each step was validated before the next one started.
His ask was specific: put a GPS on his tools so he'd stop looking for them. Marc-André started digging the following week — find the smallest tracker possible, with the longest battery life.
A Hilti ON!Track demo, a field trial of Milwaukee ONE-KEY, a meeting with Tenna. Each system is built around its own ecosystem of tools, or around heavy fleets. Nothing that covers an SMB's mixed inventory.
Asset Panda, AssetTiger, Hector: good asset registers, built for offices and inventories, not for a job site. After two months of research the conclusion was clear — what we were looking for didn't exist. We decided to build it.
It's peak season in construction. While Coboss ran flat out, Marc-André put together the business plan, sketched the product's features and prepared how to approach customers.
Plumbing, electrical, welding, excavation, renovation. Forty conversations to test the concept against the field, with no product to show. Four companies went further than a letter of intent: they put money down.
Asset management, location by QR, Bluetooth and GPS, preventive maintenance and equipment booking. The first four customers set the priorities as the product takes shape.
The four companies who put money down are labelling their real assets on their real job sites. Their corrections, week after week, are what decides what comes next.
